Retiro borders with the neighborhoods of Recoleta and San Nicolás and is an area with a lot of history. Compared to other neighborhood in the City of Buenos Aires, it a rather small area.
Its most elegant spot is around the Carlos Pellegrini Square, which is surrounded by luxurious hotels and large and fancy apartment buildings.
The distinguished and majestic area of the palaces of the Cancillería (Chancellery ) and el Círculo Militar (the Military Circle) are found close to the San Martín Square where soldiers used to train. This Square has been declared as a historical spot and is the second most important plaza in the city of Buenos Aires, only topped by the Plaza de Mayo.
In the San Martín Square you can also see the San Martín Monument, and the monument honoring those who passed away in the war of the Islas Malvina y Atlántico Sur (Falkland Islands and South Atlantic). 25 black marmour plates show the names of all the soldiers that had to give their life in defense of their country.

Torre de los Ingleses (The Tower of the English) is located in the Plaza Fuerza Aérea Argentina (Argentina Air Force Square) in front of the Retiro Train Station. The Retiro Train Station found} across the streets contains three main train terminals, and the long distance buss station of the City of Buenos Aires.
El Totem Canadiense (The Canadian Totem) was donated by Canadian industries and can be seen in the Plaza Canadá. The statue is carved by hand in red cedar wood and shows a indigenous motif. The sculpture shows animals in the colors of red, white, and black.
